Library Assistant

The Gafney Library is seeking a Library Assistant for a 30 hour/week position and will be responsible for assisting the Youth Services Librarian half those hours and assisting the Administrative Assistant the other half, with the emphasis on patron circulation. Candidate must enjoy interacting with the public; have good written and verbal communication skills; be computer literate and be comfortable assisting patrons of all ages, including planning and holding teen programming. This position requires significant interaction with the public.

Starting Wage: $15.50 per hour 

Schedule: (Subject to change)
Tuesday, Tuesday, & Wednesday – 12:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Friday – 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Saturday – 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Sunday & Monday- OFF

Primary Job Responsibilities:
•    Provide excellent customer service to patrons at the Circulation and Youth Areas
•    Check library materials in and out, place holds, create new library cards, and renew materials
•    Assist visitors in locating appropriate materials and using public access terminals for the catalog, Internet, and subscription databases, including instruction to the public
•    Provide reader’s advisory and reference services to the public, in person or over the telephone, 
•    Process and shelve materials, as well as perform circulation duties as needed
•    Assist patrons with copying, faxing, printing, and other computer needs
•    In partnership with the Youth Services Librarian, plan and facilitate programming and special events for teens
•    In partnership with the Youth Services Librarian, help plan and assist in execution of the annual Summer Reading Program
•    Promote the libraries activities and programs to the public in person, over the telephone, and/or via email.
•    Assist with maintaining the teen collection as deemed appropriate by the Youth Services Librarian
•    Develop and maintain displays, bulletin boards, and reading lists
•    Attend meetings and professional conferences at the discretion of the Library Director
•    Provide coverage within library as assigned
•    Perform other related duties as assigned

Training, Skills, Experience:
Minimum of High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate. Some college experience preferred. Related public service experience required, preferably in a library setting. 

Other Considerations and Requirements:
•    Job requires some lifting, kneeling/squatting, frequent changing of positions from sitting to standing, along with the ability to climb on stools to retrieve materials
•    The ability to listen, understand and interpret visitors and staff requests and questions is critical 
•    Flexible thinking and customer service attitude is required 
•    Ability to work cooperatively and patiently with staff and library users
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•    Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal to moderate supervision
•    Enthusiasm for reading and information systems is a definite plus
•    Ability to learn new software systems as needed
•    Proficient in use of computer programs including Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Suites, email, Canva and Internet applications
•    Appropriate attire and courteous manners are expected

Grade/Classification: Non-exempt. Hourly position

*Some benefits are not available until completion of probationary period
