"Three Men and a One-Shilling Knife: A Genealogical Look at Local History"

Presented by the New Hampshire Society of Genealogists, this engaging program uses a dramatic 1788 tavern killing in New Durham to show how genealogists uncover the stories from the past. Through newspapers, court records, military records, petitions, and other original sources, the lecture follows the intertwined lives of three Revolutionary War veterans and reveals how family history research can illuminate the people, events, and communities of New Hampshire’s past.

During the month of October, the Gafney Library will present a retrospective of the works of the late Anne L. Ireland. This exhibit features a variety of mediums including oils, watercolors, etchings and monotypes- a printmaking process in which a unique print is created by transferring an image from a smooth surface such as glass, metal or plastic onto paper.

The retrospective is being curated by Jan Ledbetter, in coordination with Ireland’s daughter, Leigh-Anne Nietling.

The Gafney Library welcomes you to join us for a reception on Thursday, October 15th, from 4:00-6:00 pm to view the exhibit and celebrate the work and life of Anne L. Ireland. The retrospective will be on display throughout the month of October and may be viewed during regular library hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 12:00 pm-7 pm, Friday from 9:00 am-2:00 pm, and Saturday from 9:00 am-1:00 pm.

New Hampshire has attracted and inspired artists since the colonial era. What is distinctive about the art made here? This program will consider works by itinerant and folk painters, landscape artists drawn to the state's scenic vistas, and modern artists that adopted bold styles to depict everyday life in the Granite State. Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Childe Hassam, and Maxfield Parrish are some of the artists discussed in this program.
