Oyster reefs are the coral reefs of the North—living breakwaters that protect shorelines, enhance water quality, and create thriving underwater habitats. The eastern oyster has historically played a vital role in the ecology of the Great Bay Estuary and as many as one thousand acres of live oyster reef may have covered the estuary in 1970, but over 90% of oysters were lost due to pollution, harvest and disease. When oysters disappear, the whole estuary suffers. When they return, everything improves. Join us as we dive into the fascinating story of oysters in the Great Bay Estuary. We'll explore the captivating history of oyster populations, why oysters are ecological powerhouses, and how oyster farming and volunteers are helping to restore these important bivalves.

The Gafney Library is excited to welcome local author JessicaEverett on April 7, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. Readers may also recognize her by herpen names: Jessie Crockett, Jessica Ellicott, and Jessica Estevao. Everett isan Agatha award nominee who lovesfountain pens, red convertibles and throwing parties. She lives in northern NewEngland with her dark and mysterious husband, exuberant children and aprecocious poodle named Sam. When away fromher desk, she obsessively knits wool socks and enthusiastically speaksPortuguese with a shocking disregard for the rules of grammar. 

Join us at the library as we celebrate Zoo Lovers Day! Young animal fans will learn some fun facts about lions and then create their very own lion craft to take home. It’s the perfect way to show your love for wildlife—no safari required!

Genealogy Night is an open, informal gathering for anyone interested in exploring family history. Participants are welcome to bring their laptops, connect with fellow genealogy enthusiasts, and share tips, research strategies, and family lines.

Attendees will also have access to Ancestry Library Edition during the evening, providing a valuable opportunity to explore historical records and advance their research with others nearby.

When you think of comfort items, the grilled cheese is high on many
people’s list! There’s something about the warm melty cheese and toasty bread that just makes everyone happy.
 
Stop in from 4-5:00 p.m. to help celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day with Ms. Ashley and Ms. Susan and enjoy your very own grilled cheese!

Join us for a day of self-expression! We’ll be gathering our art materials and creating self-portraits to celebrate World Art Day

Once a month, September - December, 2025, a Community Resource Coordinator from Tri-County CAP will be spending a Friday at the library to meet with anyone who may have questions or need assistance with services.

Some services they can help with is fuel assistance, transportation, housing, free diaper program, free winter clothing and more.

No appointment is needed, just stop by the library during the date and time of visit.

During the month of April, the Gafney Library will be exhibiting the works of artist Linda Hefner, who is known for her vibrant acrylic paintings of historical New England barns and architecture.

Hefner will be presenting an exhibit which displays clear-eyed paintings in acrylic, which are painstakingly drafted on fine, prepared birch boards sanded to an eggshell finish and seem a rebuke to the blur of contemporary life. Other pieces include sanded birch panels and prints.

The exhibit may be viewed throughout the month of April during the library’s regular open hours. An art meet and greet with Hefner be held at the Gafney Library on Saturday, April 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The public is warmly invited to attend.
